Weekend progress

What did you read this weekend?

I finished reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yesterday, and made a little more progress on A Thousand Splendid Suns tonight. While I probably won't finish ATSS this weekend, I'm getting pretty close.

Order of the Phoenix is my least favorite Harry Potter. Harry is whiny and stubborn and I just don't like to listen to him complain about how unfairly he's being treated. I don't like the resolution with Umbridge. I don't like Dumbledore's reasons for ignoring Harry the whole year. Now just one more to re-read and almost two weeks left to do it.

Last weekend, when I sewed all day, I made this tote bag. It ended up being a little larger than I had hoped, and while it will be great for picnics, overnights, the beach (if we HAD a beach here) and maybe even grocery shopping, it's not great for everyday use.

So then this weekend I made this bag: It's fully lined, and has a little pocket for my phone, keys, library card, etc. I only wish I'd made the pocket in a contrasting color. I'm thinking about making more and selling them for cheap on Etsy. Bad idea?

And last, I made this very quick cape for the monkey. It's not very well made, but he's two, and he doesn't know the difference. He can't decide if he's a Superhero or Little Red Riding Hood. In this picture, he's "FLYING! Very high!"

  1. Very cute handiwork! (The monkey included)

Sometimes I wish I was more of a sewing-type person. I did sew a belt loop back onto a dress the other day and you would have thought I had won the nobel prize for how excited I was about it.

This weekend I read PS, I Love You. It's chick lit about a lady who loses her husband to a brain tumor and how she copes with his death as everyone around her goes on with their lives. The husband left a packet of notes for each month remaining in the year for things he wants her to accomplish, so that's also part of the story line. It was OK. Not spectacular.

Then yesterday I started a book called Unless by Carol Shields. It's fiction about an author and mother of three girls. One day her oldest girl decides to change her life completely by becoming a bum on the street in search of "goodness". So it's about the mom trying to deal with the "loss" of her daughter and trying to figure out what her daughter is looking for.

  2. I have PS I Love You on my shelves to read. I had a friend pre-read it for me and she thought about what you did- eh, not great.

  3. Wow! Look how crafty you are! Wowowow! Love the tote!

I haven't been able to get through one Harry Potter book -- precisely because Harry's so darn whiny....

I can't believe how fast you read.... :)

  4. I read the Interpreter of Maladies. It wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be.
