Virtual Advent Day 14: Not So Wordless Wednesday

It's that time of year again, the time of parties, trees, lights, cookies and fudge. It's also the time of year where we frantically scrounge through our pictures looking for a good one for the Christmas card. We put the kids in their best clothes and convince them all to smile at the camera (hell, to LOOK at the camera!) all at the same time. Adding a third child to the occasion didn't make it any easier.

This year we decided to take my brother-in-law and his fancy camera to the Pierre Capitol Building for a little photoshoot. In December, the Capitol is always decorated with dozens of trees and lights, and is open to the public to view. In the evenings there is live music, the library sets up an area and reads stories, and there is a little station to decorate an ornament and hang it on a nearby tree.

In the end, we bribed the boys with Happy Meals and we still didn't end up with a smiling happy family picture. We did end up with the picture shown above, which certainly has it own charms.  Now I'm impatiently waiting for the cards to show up in the mail so I can start the process of picking out my favorite 50 friends and family.  (I kid!) (Kinda!)

  2. I love that picture! It makes for a better shot than a formal affair where everyone looks like they are being tortured. :)

    Thanks for joining in!

  4. Even with just one kid, we always end up looking like we're being tortured in our holiday photos.

  5. What a great picture of your family! I like pictures that are sometimes spontaneous and not over planned for the "perfect" shot. This is one for the memory books indeed! Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!

  7. I love it--and one day you'll look back lovingly as well. ;)

I'm convinced I have not met that middle child. Certainly that's not the bug. He's WAY too big!! I can't even believe it.

How fun about the capitol. We need to get out more but we're weather wimps (yes, 50 degrees is COLD!)

  8. That is so cute! I think a picture with character is nicer than one that's overly posed, myself. :)

  10. Your card IS adorable! I have the same problem with my three children, one of them is either not looking at the camera, making a face, or something. You are all going to laugh and love this photo as the years go by. Thanks for sharing it with us! Your kids are so sweet. Merry Christmas!

  12. This picture is just priceless :) I can NEVER get a picture when all three kids are smiling at the camera but it has become a kind of personal goal. LOL! Maybe it will become easier as they get older :)
