Book lists and other things of note.

I've decided to join the Newberry Challenge. I'm not sure where I'll find the time to read them, but I can't help myself. I figure just entering the challenge will have me reading at least a couple books I'd otherwise skip over. I had a really hard time choosing as so many of them brought back memories for me. I managed to only pick one that I had read before (#6). Here's my list:
  1. The Giver by Lois Lowry (1994 Newberry Winner and on my Dystopian Challenge list.)
  2. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (1990 Newberry Winner)
  3. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (1979)
  4. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
  5. Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt (1967)
  6. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle (1963)
  7. (alternate title) The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare (1959)

(Gina, you should definately do this one with me!)

I am definitely going to create a TBR list over here, because I need to see how far behind I am at every moment!

I have finished one book this week (Plum Lovin' by Evanovich) and will get a brief review up soon. I have been reading another quick one (Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Vaughn) in the hopes of getting some quick credits over at paperbackswap. I am struggling with The Inheritance of Loss. While I'm reading it I enjoy it a lot, but the minute I stop I turn ambivalent. Each time I review my wish list at PBS I wish I were reading something other than TIoL. I am still reading The Book Thief as well, and loving it, but don't want to rush it at all.

I finished up my list of 101 Things in 1001 days, for anyone who can't live without reading another list. It's in no particular order, though I did try to group things a little.

  1. Okay, Lisa, just from this list alone and adding a book from the 80's (maybe you've already read one this year) and 2000's (which I KNOW you've read this year)--you would have 7 consecutive decades for the By the Decade Challenge.

    Just an FYI! (Evil grin)

  2. I meant to add that I am doing the Dystopian Challenge--I'm just behind on choosing my books.

  3. Ok, so as far as I can tell, The Handmaid's Tale was published in 1986. I'll sign up for that when you post your list for Dystopia...

  4. Ok, I loved The Give, Number the Stars, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, AND The Westing Game. Just a hint, for the Westing Game, keep notes!! I'm a huge mystery reader and I had to :) This is why I had a hard time with the Newbery Challenge, cause I've read most everything on it. (It's one r by the way.)

    Enjoy!!

  6. P.S. If anyone is looking for another idea, A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park was AMAZING!

  7. That's ok, I always typed it wrong too until my Lit for the Gifted Child professor finally corrected me :)

  8. I decided to join too. You are so lucky to be reading The Westing Game for the first time. It was a wonderful book.

  9. Nice list. I'm going to join this challenge, too, but still need to decide on books. Just order The Westing Game, so that should definitely be one of them. Oh, and I'd like to read the 2006 winner, Lucky.

  10. I have Lucky. Aside from the "scrotum" controversy, the book has gotten a lot of mixed reviews from those in my library courses. Most are wondering how it got the award because it really wasn't a "fantastic" book. However, I'm going to give it a go too. Just three more weeks till my classes are over then I can dive into a challenge. :)
