Very short reviews of recent books

I have actually managed to read a few books of the last couple of months, I just haven't quite managed to blog about them. Because I'm still feeling under the weather (THIS HAD BETTER BE THE BEST BABY EVER IN THE HISTORY OF BABIES!!) I'm going to do some very brief reviews to catch up. If you have any questions about particular books, or if you read them too, please let me know!

In random order:

The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest UniversityThe Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose. Roose transfers to Liberty University for a semester to see what it's like. He does not reveal his true background to his fellow students, or that he's planning to write about it. I read this one in Hawaii and on the plane(s) and quite enjoyed it. I thought Roose was very open minded and thoughtful about the experience, when he could have been awfully snarky and dismissive. I enjoyed it more than The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible by A J Jacobs.

Born On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic SavantBorn On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet. I first noticed this one in a review at The Zen Leaf and requested it from the library. Tammet is both very interesting and very annoying. I get that he is Autistic, and therefore doesn't behave as everyone else, and yes, I know he wrote the book and is intelligent- he was still annoying.  The book itself is interesting and a very quick read.  Tammet also has synesthesia, which interests me after reading A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass (YA fiction, not non-fiction.)

Waiting For Nick: Stanislaskis (The Stanislaskis)Waiting For Nick: Stanislaskis (The Stanislaskis) by Nora Roberts. Eh. Loved Nick and the music aspect of it, didn't really like Freddie much at all.  Did make me interested in reading the others in the series.

Feels Like the First Time (Harlequin Blaze)Feels Like the First Time (Harlequin Blaze) by Tawny Weber. High school reunion plot, the entire story takes place over a weekend. In a word: HOT.

I am very very close to being done with Crafty Superstar: Make Crafts on the Side, Earn Extra Cash, and Basically Have It All by Grace Dobush and will do a longer review on that one.

What have you read lately? Have you read any of these? Do you agree or disagree with my opinion? Let me know!

  1. I didn't find Tammet annoying at all. I really understood him and he spoke to me in a way that makes sense to me. Hm...

  2. I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Hopefully that part of the pregnancy will pass soon. I really enjoyed The Unlikely Disciple too.

  3. I had all-day sickness with my daughter and it didn't go away until she was about two months old. I certainly hope you feel better.

I haven't read any of these. I've been so picky with my reading lately. I've been in a weird mood. Things are rushing by me again (it's almost April!) and I have been super swamped at work so I haven't had the time to just sit and be. I get crazy when I can't sit and be.

  4. Hopefully you will feel better soon. Going to Hawaii and feeling sick are on opposite ends of the spectrum!

  5. If it helps, I can give the baby my teacher stare. I've heard it can be quite intimidating. :-D

  6. I hope you feel better soon. I have a couple of books going right now. I hope that I can get them read.

  7. I think part of the problem with the third pregnancy is that you have absolutely no time to rest or take care of yourself. How in the world do those ladies with 6, or 8 or 10 kids survive?!

  8. The Unlikely Disciple sounds like a good one. I couldn't get into The Year of Living Biblically so much, so I'm glad you threw that bit in.

  9. I have born on a Blue Day sitting on my shelf.

I am now wondering, after working with autistic children, if I really want to read it.

  10. Haha! I do hope the morning sickness subsides soon for you, Lisa. And I'm sure it will, in fact, be the best baby ever. At least equal to the two you have. :-)

I'm glad you liked Roose's book as that one is in my TBR collection waiting its turn. I keep telling myself I'm going to dedicate a month to religious-themed memoirs, but can't seem to manage it. One of these days . . .

  11. Haven't read anything in quite a while. Too much going on, but not really doing anything, either.

I, too, hope you start feeling better soon.
