Organize your shelves by color? (TSS)

Have you ever been tempted to organize your bookshelves by color?

I had a wild hair today! There's a blue one that I'm gonna move, and I'm not so sure that the silver section on the 4th shelf down reads as silver and not just white ones that I shoved in at random. It was a lot of fun to do, but I suspect I'll never be able to find certain books again. What do you think? Would you move any of them?

How are your shelves organized? Do you know anyone who has theirs by color? I'd love to see how other people handle titles that are evenly split between two colors, like Lily Burana's I Love a Man in Uniform right there in the middle of the middle shelf.

I'm not sure if I can leave them this way forever, but for today it's awfully fun!

  1. I saw somebody once that had a huge set of shelves organized rainbow-like. It was lovely. I just organize mine by genre and author name. Like a library. Boring.

  2. It looks terrific! I am put off from doing the same based on the fact many series (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson) have different colors for each book and I don't want to separate them. Same issue with alphabetizing DVDs by title... I can't break up the James Bonds!

  3. puttopal, the only series I had to split up was the Patrick O'Brien books, and they aren't mine. Harry Potter lives in the other room. I did have to separate all the baseball books and quite a few authors.

  4. I was tempted more than once to organize book in stores where I worked by color. It's amazing how many people would come in and say somethink like: "I'm looking for a book. I don't know the name or the author, but it's yellow." What really scared me was that I would know which book they wanted! I say, whatever works for you is the way to go!

  5. They look great! My books really aren't organized because they are overflowing my shelves right now!

  6. I organised my TBR case my colour at the beginning of the year! :D Then I forgot to take a pic and post it-now it's become a bit messier, lol. But I'm thinking about organising all three of my cases by colour!

  7. I just organize mine in the order in which I plan to read them (TBR), the others, by size. Not very original. I like the rainbow effect of yours though.

  8. I don't have many books (as Lisa well knows :-)) so I loosely organize them by genre. Half of my collection is knitting magazines, so it doesn't take much work!

  9. It looks awesome! I think the silver (that looks almost white) is fine because it goes from light to dark. I haven't organized by color before, but in my old house I had my books arranged from tallest to shortest. On a couple of shelves I made it to where the tallest ones were on the outside and dipped down to the shortest in the middle. It was my brother's idea actually and it looked pretty cool! Right now mine are organized in alphabetical order by author. Boring, but practical.

  10. looks great! I've only ever done that with fabric (same problem of multiple colored ones, so for my scrap bins I have orange, yellow, etc then just light, dark, and medium bins for the rest.

  11. My new shelves are divided by hardback, to be read soon paperback, and non-fiction. The other shelves are organized by height and wherever there is room (that's a shelving method, right?).

  12. That looks really cool!

I'm a little too unorganized to do that. I have general areas by genre, but no real organization past that.

btw, did you know on Goodreads our taste in books is 93% the same? :)

  13. It looks pretty. :-) I've never been tempted to organize by color, but I did organize by size once. Mostly, I just organize alphabetically by author's surname. The hardback and trade paperbacks are all kept together and then the mass market paperbacks have their own section. I once tried organizing by genre or book type, but that didn't last very long.

  14. Eva, straighten it up and take a picture!

Kelly, it's way easier than by name, just pull them off, make stacks by color and put them back! I DID see that on Goodreads, but thought it would make me look even more obsessive to mention it. I keep meaning to go back and look at your shelves in greater detail.

  15. So PRETTY! Maybe harder to find, but who cares?! :)

  16. I have done a modified version of this. I arranged all our books in our 4 large double bookcases (They spanned a wall in the room we called "the library") by size and color when we had that house for sale. Since the area covered was so great, thought, I did mix it up a bit to spread the various color sections out.

Normally I like to have fiction alphabetized and nonfiction by subject. I keep paperbacks separate from hardcovers and trade paperbacks. I'm a little OCD about this so the color/size arrangement, while it looked good for showing the house, eventually drove me crazy.

  17. Very interesting idea--I like it!My books are currently organized in alphabetical order. It was an arduous process, so it will probably never happen again. Before that, they were semi-organized by genre and/or author.

  18. I have never considered organizing my books by color but I do find something satisfying about keeping series together in color blocks(like the black reference books together, then the red encyclopedia together). I have two shelves of my own. One is all classics organized in ABC order by the author's last name. The other shelf has modern literature organized by ABC order of title names and the non-fiction organized by book size. Don't ask me why they are all different but I know where to find what I want so it works for me.

  19. I LOVE the way this looks! Someone else pointed me to a link to another blogger who posted a photo of their color coordinated shelves. I'd love to do this, but I would definitely divide entire series and mix genres so that I'd have trouble finding my books. I mean... totally mix genres... cookbooks mixed with romance mixed with travel books mixed with Harry Potter? LOL!

  20. I have to admit I think this looks really cool, but I think it would take forever to organize. My shelves are all organized by size, so I can't find much on them either.

  21. Um, hello...since you have SO much spare time can you please come and organize my shelves?????

It does look really lovely, though. Really really. Especially the green.

  22. I love the color idea! My bookshelves always look like such a hodgepodge. I'll have to try that.

  23. What a fun project. I actually went and alphabetised my three shelves of TBR books in the garage the other day. It was a very soothing activity.
