A Reading Update, with Lists (TSS)

The Sunday Salon.com

Ok, brace yourself. I have a bunch of book lists to share today.

First, Trish's Non-Fiction Five Challenge ended a few days ago. The challenge was to read 5 non-fiction books between May and the end of September. I didn't quite make it, finishing up at four books:

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver (I did not review this, but I loved it, and it changed my way of thinking about food.)
Rapture Ready! by Daniel Radosh (my review)
Craft, Inc.: Turn Your Creative Hobby into a Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco (my review)
The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections by Amanda Blake Soule (my review)

I might not have finished the challenge but I got closer than I have on any other!

I added quite a few books to my TBR list in September (which is different from the TBR shelves!) Here's the titles, followed by a link to the review that pushed me over the edge.

Up for Renewal: What Magazines Taught Me About Love, Sex, and Starting Over by Cathy Alter - Nat at Book, Line and Sinker
Liar by Justine Larbalesteir- Liz B at A Chair, A Fireplace and a Tea Cozy
The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff- Ti at Book Chatter and Other Stuff (BARGAIN PRICE!)
Playboy Boss by Kate Hardy- Senetra, Guest Reviewer at avidbookreader
French Milk by Lucy Knisley- JoAnn at Lakeside Musing (BARGAIN PRICE!)
Tattoo Machine: Tall Tales, True Stories, and My Life in Ink by Jeff Johnson- Maggie at Maggie Reads
Once Was Lost by Sara Zarr- Amanda at A Patchwork of Books
When Seducing a Duke by Kathryn Smith- Katiebabs at Babbling about Books
Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted- Angiegirl at Angieville (LOVE that cover!)
Can't Stand The Heat by Louisa Edwards- Jessica at Racy Romance Reviews
Almost Perfect
by Brian Katcher- Abby (the) Librarian

You can see the whole list at this link. What did you add to your list this month?

As I've mentioned before, I read several books at once. I decided to round up all the books that I've read more than a chapter of and make a list. It's about this time a year where I start to think that I should push to finish the ones I've started so that I can start next year with a blank slate. In no particular order, here's what I'm reading now:

Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols
The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5) by Kim Harrison
The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs
It Sucked and Then I Cried by Heather Armstrong
Monkey Girl: Evolution, Education, Religion, and the Battle for America's Soul by Edward Humes
Death Masks (The Dresden Files, Book 5) by Jim Butcher
Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James

Recent blog posts have made me want to read Outlander. And I really do plan to read Patricia Brigg's Hunting Ground very soon.

And then there are all the library books I have checked out.

Do you feel like you need to finish certain books before the end of the year? Do you have a stack of books you need to get back to or do you just read one til it's done? Are you frantically trying to finish your year end challenges? What's on your list?

  1. I just read "Just the Sexiest Man Alive" last week. Good, but I think "Practice Makes Perfect" is better.

  2. Yay for the NFF and getting closer than you've come. That in itself is accomplishment.

Now, have a bookmark in several books and actively reading several books are two different things. Are you reading all of these books now?? Holy geez! I have several that I have a bookmark a chapter in (including AVM), but I'm not actively reading any of them. Really need to get back to those.

  3. This is a great post just because I like looking at all of these lists :) Seriously though, as it gets closer and closer to the end of the year I am just trying to enjoy whatever it is that I am reading. I'm not too worried about any of the challenges and if I finish them or not but I do want to try and read SOME of the library books that I have checked out.

  4. Hi, Lisa! Sorry I've been such a stranger. You did much better than I did in terms of the Non-Fiction challenge. Four is a very good effort. :-)

The Danish Girl is on my wish list too. No, I take that back. I think it's in my TBR collection. I just need to read it. :-)

There are definitely books I would like to finish before the year is out, but I have no set list. I dropped out of most of my challenges last month and that took a lot of the pressure off.

I tend to read one book at a time, and at the most two but that's rare. Since I don't often have a lot of time to read during the week, sticking to one book works best for me.

I hope you have a great week, Lisa!

  5. I make all kinds of crazy bookish deadlines for myself, but completing challenges isn't one of them, for some odd reason. Having said that, I think I might actually finish one this year.

  6. Yayyyy for Animal, Vegetable, Miracle! It's one of my all-time faves, and it also changed my way of looking at food. And I sooo want to make my own cheese now. lol

  8. I really liked Animal, Vegetable, Miracle too! I read In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma around the same time - guess I was on a food reading kick. Hope you like French Milk.

  9. There are lots of books I want to read by the end of the year, but I know that I won't and I told myself to stop worrying about it!

  10. I have 6 books that need to be read immediately:

    Of Bees and Mist
    Sportcaster's Guide to Football
    The Art of Meaningful Living
In the Time of the Butterflies
Viola in Reel Life (must finish)
New Moon (before movie comes out)

I am feeling that frantic, antsy feeling that I feel when I overbook myself. With my husband forced to work extra hours on the weekend (darn economy) I don't have quiet reading time anymore.

  11. I actually joined a challenge (Fall Into Reading) in the hopes that it would inspire me to finish all of the books I have sitting here with bookmarks in them. So far I've knocked 3 off the original list of 9 (and snuck in a few that weren't on the list as well). Here's hoping it works because I don't want to have them be holdovers into next year!

  12. I'm trying to finish the ones I started too... But I want to finish up some more challenges as well, so we'll see. By the way, I love the idea of listing the books I add to my list each month, hope you don't mind if I do that too!

  13. Oh I totally have a stack of books I want to finish before the year ends. I keep on getting library books (I have to say "No Amanda No") and getting review books I have to review. I also am desperately trying to get 100 books in this year but am not sure I'm going to make it. Ahh!!! Haha. And then those challenges. I failed the Non-Fiction one but am going to still try to finish it before the year is out. We'll see...it's all fun, right?

  14. I think I go through phases. Right now I'm trying to read my childhood-favourites, but I did sign up for this monster duel reading thing where people read either Frankenstein or Dracula. I should really be concentrating on that.

Usually a read one book at a time girl, but I'm reading two at the moment! One is Charlotte's Web though :)
