Ready, Set, RUN!

For at least the last 10 years I've said that I want to start running. I think running is so meditative, with the rhythm of the run and the solitude, but I've never actually forced myself off the couch and out the door.  But now, finally, with my new iPrecious iPhone, I have followed through on my intent to start running, just in time for the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge. I've only been twice (life got in the way of my third date with the pavement) but I can tell you that it's going to stick (at least until winter.)

How do I know this? I spent money on it. I bought running shorts (a skort! but mine is navy), a sports bra, an arm band for the phone (that doesn't fit me, but does fit Mike). I bought the Couch to 5K app AND the additional GPS app. I started collecting workout music (more on this momentarily). I'm planning to try and run on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and take Friday and Saturday off to rest, but it largely depends on Mike's schedule. I'm so looking forward to that 45 minutes alone three times a week (yes, this may be part of my new found motivation!) I would love it if I could talk one of you into doing the C2K program with me. If you start now I'm only two days ahead of you and it would be easy to catch up.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for more running music. Here's what I have so far:

  • Shut Up and Drive- Rihanna
  • Lose Yourself- Eminem
  • I Gotta Feeling- The Black Eyed Peas
  • Boom Boom Pow- BEPs
  • Rock That Body- BEPs
  • Fighter- Christina Aguilera
  • See You Again- Miley Cyrus
  • Girls Just Wanna Have Fun- Miley Cyrus
  • Song 2- Plain White T's
I know it's not a lot. Music isn't something that I've ever really collected. I like pretty much everything but don't have a constant need for music. It took me two months to finally settle on a ringtone to download to my phone!  So I need your help, what music do I need to add to my playlist? I've been diligently downloading the free song on iTunes every week, but none of those have been very workout inspiring, yet.

So what else do I need? What music? What gear? What motivation? I'm all new to this, I need to stock up while the motivation is so high!

  1. Hooray for you!! I'm sure that alone time would be a huge motivator for a mom with young kids. I've had my iPhone for a couple years and didn't even know you can download a ringtone.

  2. Wow! Enjoy your time alone. As to music - anything that makes you want to get up and dance works for me (not running but dancing around the house). I'll think about this.

  3. I give you a lot of credit! I myself am a walker. I listen to books, music doesn't work for me.

  4. I don't listen to much music when I run. I tend to run to audio books or, my favourite option, the BBC Radio 4 Friday Comedy podcasts. A good fast paced book or something funny helps me pass the time. But then I'm not really a musical person.

That said I am partial to:
    Aretha Franklin - Respect
    Jam - Eton Rifles
    Pulp - Common People
    Song 2 - Blur
Mothers Little Helper - Rolling Stones (just to remind me why I'm running :-)
One Way or Another - Blondie
Basically anything from my youth. The tackier the better. A bit of Wham and some Duran Duran never goes amiss.

  5. I would love to do this with you since I would like to lose a few pounds and more importantly tone up after baby. I have to delay my sign up though until I get the ok from my doctor to work out - hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

  6. I love to run but must admit that I very RARELY find the time. It is so hard especially with the little two. Good luck with this and I hope that you are able to find the time. And I agree that anything with a good dance tempo is good for running.

  7. Go for it!! Find a 5k race near you and set that as a goal. I say anything that you'd want to dance to...Prince's Little Red Corvette.

  8. My favorites on the workout playlist: "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows, "4 Minutes" by Justin Timberlake and Madonna, "My Life Would Suck Without You" by Kelly Clarkson, "Yeah" by Usher (I can't believe this song is 7+ years old now), and "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I hope you enjoy running! My husband just finished the Couch to 5K program this spring and really enjoyed it - it was the only workout program that didn't hurt his knees.

  10. Good luck with the running! I have no illusions about running any time soon but I am hoping to get back into a walking routine if I can just get my work life on some kind of schedule.

  11. Well done, sounds like a good plan! I wanted to do the C25K program too, but didn't manage to fit it in past week 3, I think... I try to walk as much as possible now, but hope that at some point I'll get back to running too! Good luck!
