Random Friday: The shocker is at the end.

Neumann banner
  • The most recent custom banner, I think this is number 52.
  • I'm skipping the challenge today. It's to dress up jeans and a T-shirt and I'm just not feeling it.
  • Thanks for all your good thoughts for the Bug and back to school. It's been a tough few days. He is very needy and clingy.
  • Speaking of, I think he is scared of... lightbulbs. Yeah, I know, crazy. But I really think he is afraid of the light fixtures, specifically the one over the vanity in the bathroom, but sometimes others.
  • I've started the process of cleaning out the storage unit. We're hoping to sell a ton of stuff and then put the rest in our garage and save ourselves the monthly money.  It's gonna be a huge project.
  • Mike is off this weekend (which means he'll only go in for a couple hours each day) and we have no plans except to work a bit on the storage unit.  I've pretty excited because we've decided to bring my sewing cabinet back to the apartment.
  • Hexes are coming along very slowly, but I did add two more small rings this week. (Link in the left sidebar, if you're curious.)
  • Have you ever felt like you have so many good ideas, and you're right on the verge of breaking through to something big, something successful, but you just don't have QUITE enough time in your day to get there? No? Just me?  I've had several very stressful days this week where I had so many things that had to be done and all I could think about was how very close I was to finally getting somewhere with other things. The had to be dones are what are paying the bills, while the almosts might pay bills one day. It's a tough balance.
What I read this week:
  • Nothing. Seriously. I know.

Dear Target, your pencils suck.

I recently had to sharpen The Pirate's school pencils, all 48 of them. We bought the Target home brand, Up & Up. Not one of the 48 pencils sharpened to a nice pretty point. They shredded or splintered or the lead inside was in tiny fragments that fell out. I would not enjoy writing a sentence with them, let alone a whole school year.

This is the first time I've been disappointed by the Target brand, but if I lived close enough I'd actually taken them back.

(found this in my drafts, thought I'd go ahead and post it!)

Closet orphans

Today's challenge was to wear a closet orphan- something that lingered and was never worn. Hopefully, this would shed some light on if it should be kept at all.

I chose not one, but two orphans, and I feel like I'm hitting the challenge out of the park. This shirt is another shirt with a band at the bottom, like the one I wore on day two of the challenge. Like last time, I much prefer it tucked in and imagine it will see a lot more use now. The second orphan are my shoes. I got these seven or eight years ago and while I love them I've decided they just aren't comfortable enough to keep.

I am also tucking it in and wearing my remix item from day one.

I dread school starting tomorrow

School starts tomorrow for the Pirate. He's fairly unexcited but we met his teacher last night and some of his friends were there which perked him up a bit about it. I'm not overly concerned about the Pirate. I think he'll be ok once he's used to the schedule. I am completely worried about the Bug. The Bug, who is 3, is not starting school tomorrow, despite what he might tell you. He stayed home with dad last night while the Pirate and I went to the open house, and Mike reports that he was devastated. Heartbroken. Unable to breathe because he was crying so hard. I have no idea how we're going to get the Pirate out of the car at school without a huge scene. I have no idea how the Bug will possibly survive without his brother. I'm trying to think up some exciting activities, but sadly there isn't much that the Bug truely loves, besides the Pirate. I'm planning to make a big big deal about how he's the Big Kid at home now! Other than that, I'm stumped. The park won't be enough. I'm not sure McDonalds would do it. Suggestions, cheap ones, welcome.

Meanwhile, I'm still participating in the 21 Day Challenge. I have managed to miss two days of pictures, but I still did the outfit! Today's theme was "monochromatic." Since it's supposed to be 100 here today, I wanted to be cool, so I choose a loose skirt and a tank top (and flip flops, but I didn't put them on for the picture.) Today's picture courtesy of the Bug, age 3.

Tank top: Target
Skirt: Walmart
Flip flips: Sanuks

21 DC Day 6, unexpected

Drive by post today! Ignore the awkward baby-holding pose.

Day 6 was wear something in an unexpected way. I'm wearing a dress as a skirt. This is a super cute strapless sundress that fit me really well 15 or 20 pounds ago. I can't quite zip it any more, so I unzipped it to the waist and tucked the bodice under the waist band.

Shirt: Walmart
Dress as skirt: Maurices
Shoes: Pamida

Random Friday: Vacation Adventure and 21DC, Day 4

  • Yesterday's Challenge was "color blocking." I pretty much do this all the time.
  • This is my only pair of shorts. I would have gone with a nice colored skirt for this challenge, except we took a mini-vacation to a kid's park and I wanted to be able to climb on the playgrounds with them.
  • Mike took the only picture of me yesterday. It has now traveled cell phone to cell phone to email to blog. This is as good as it gets, quality wise!
  • Clothing: Shorts: Target, Cami: Yard sale, Tshirt: Target, Sandals: Sanuks.
  • More on the trip later, because it seriously rocked. For a 24 hour trip.
  • We got home 3 hours ago and my children are seriously seriously cranky. I can not wait for bedtime.
  • We bought school supplies yesterday on the trip, and it wasn't nearly as much money as I expected.
  • I am slightly grumpy that I have to sharpen and writes his name on 48 pencils. But I assume you are all doing that too, right?
  • I am VERY grumpy that they require two boxes of 8 crayons. REALLY?? A box of 8 is $1.97 at Target. A box of 24 is like a quarter.  I almost just bought two boxes of 24 and picked out the appropriate ones.
  • But decided to come home and check locally first, since we were out of our own school district.
  • School started Wednesday. Bring it on.
  • One more banner under works and then I'll have run out of banner orders. Do you need one? I'm going to feel adrift without one waiting on me.
What I'm Reading:
  • Faithful Place by Tana French. Not very far into it, but I'm realizing I really dislike the Irish slang stuff.

Today's to do list, and the 21DC, Day 3

Ok, I know I promised to do more than just post outfits. Y'all, I'm so swamped today I can't think past getting an outfit posted! We are taking a mini-vacation tomorrow, 36 hours of just my family, and I have to cross every single item off this list before we can leave.
  • Finish the current banner and get it in the mail.
  • UNload the car from the last camping trip.
  • Pack overnight clothes/toys/gear.
  • Find extra bedding. (We are staying in a camping cabin, they provide the beds, you provide the bedding. Most our "extra" anything are in a storage unit.)
  • Possibly go to the storage unit.
  • REload the car.
  • Do the most basic of housekeeping- garbage, litter box, dishes. More would be awesome.
  • Log my work hours for the last two weeks.
  • At least an hour of paying work.
  • Prep my invoice to submit Friday.
  • Daily life stuff, like, oh, feed the kids. Maybe talk them into putting on pants.
So, that's taking up my entire brain.

Today's wardrobe challenge prompt was "pattern mixing." Now, in theory, I like it. I love it on other people! But when I walked into my closet I discovered that I own about 6 striped shirts, one floral t-shirt, and one Hawaiian print button up. I have a lot of printed skirts, but none were in the same color family at all. Fortunately, we were allowed to use a patterned accessory. Whew.  This was the best I could do.

I've made a note to be on the lookout for more patterned shirts, specifically florals and maybe gingham. (I keep a list in my phone of things to look for at the thrift store. Am I the only one?)  Tomorrow is color blocking, and if my experience today is any indication it should be easy peasy.

Scarf: Thrifted
Shirt: Kohls, via consignment store in TN
Skirt: Maurices, thrifted
Shoes: Same black ballet flats from Pamida as yesterday

21 Day Challenge, Day 2

Today prompt is "tuck in." I'm pretty sure I haven't tucked anything in in about 7 years.

I choose this striped shirt that actually has another blue band around the bottom and I think I like it more tucked in than out. It's been in my closet for at least 5 years and I think this is maybe the 5th time I've worn it. I bought it to wear back home when the Pirate was two. You can see it in this post. (Also, that stack of books? I've read two of them.)  (Also also, look how tiny the Pirate (previously the Monkey) is there!) I paired it with a plain black a-line skirt and black ballet flats and I feel a wee bit French.

In all honesty, I probably won't leave it tucked in while we are home. I am still nursing the Princess and it's really annoying to keep untucking and re-tucking.

The Pirate served as my photographer, once again. This is the type picture he usually takes.

On the first day of the 21 Day Challenge

(which was yesterday, but I'm just now getting this posted. See remainder of paragraph for explanation) I woke up tired and lazy on the first day of the challenge. I know, I said I wanted to join so as not to be a sloppy, lazy, stay-at-home mom.  But we camped this weekend, and my baby doesn't sleep, and I didn't get a morning shower and hey, here's another excuse!  So.

The prompt for the first day was to choose an item to remix 3 times in the challenge. For those of you not in the know on fashion blogging, this simply means to wear it in three different ways or outfits.  We were not allowed to choose jeans, but I wouldn't anyway. Instead I choose this straight denim skirt. It's hard to tell in the picture, but it has tiny dark pinstripes to give it a little interest. Today I went with an easy navy tshirt, which matched a lot better in my mind than in this picture.

And speaking of the picture, the Pirate will be serving as official 21 Day Challenge photographer, so there's no guarantee that you'll even be able to SEE my outfits in many of the pictures. This is one of his better compositions. (Hey, he's six and taking pictures with an iPhone, what do you expect?)

I don't plan to do a separate post for each days outfit, I'll probably just add them to the bottom of whatever else I write that day, but for the first day I thought I'd explain myself. Doing it at all feels a little weird, to be taking a daily picture of myself, especially when you consider my tiny wardrobe and my lack of real style, but I'm looking forward to participating.

Wardrobe details:
Skirt: Target
Shirt: Walmart
Bracelet: Life is Good
Shoes: Target (multi-strap flip flops, but the Pirate didn't manage to get them in the picture)

Random Friday: Change so slow it's invisible

  • Thanks for all your great feedback on my post about change. I think what I really crave is more conversation. Or even more comments. Some days your comments are the only adult interaction I get!
  • I'm crazy, and I'm not doing it, but I so want to join this stitch along. I'm getting more and more interested in handwork lately. And no, I don't have time for more projects!
  • Speaking of projects, the hexes continue to multiple, slowly. (See sidebar for current count!)
  • Yesterday I registered the Pirate for first grade. First grade! Next up, school supplies shopping! I love school supplies.
  • I find myself slightly obsessed with pretty journal pages like this one. And this one. (See: no time for more projects.)
  • This weekend: more camping! Yay!
  • I made two more banners this week. I have two more in the works. (I'm struggling to find a good spot for pictures in this apartment. WAY too dark in the bedroom!)
  • I have started working on some simple tote bags with custom words on them, like say, to match the banners?
  • I'm about to watch the So You Think You Can Dance finale. Shhh. Don't tell me who won. (But I hope it's Melanie!)
  • Hey! Are you following the shop on Facebook? Why not?
What I Read This week:
  • Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris is really the only thing I've picked up. It was a rough start for me, I felt like she might just be bored with the series and phoning it in.  Fortunately, the plot picked up a little and I'm liking it. (Does anyone else miss the easy linking to Amazon in the sidebar while composing your post?)

On blogging style and identity

This weekend I was thinking about my blog and my blog identity. It's not a secret that I'd like to figure out how to have more blog traffic but if you've been a reader for any length of time you know that my posting has gotten a bit sporadic lately. This is partly because I'm just crazy busy all the time and my blog feels like an indulgence, but it's also because I've realized that my blog lacks cohesion.  There are plenty of bloggers who do completely unrelated blog entries and it works really well for them, and while that's the type blog I'd most like to have, it's been a bit discouraging.

In the midst of all this self-indulgent introspection, I read two posts about blog identity, which gave me more food for thought. First, I read a post about sitting down and making goals for your blog, maybe "increase traffic" or "learn SEO" or "post every day" and I actually took notes!  It suggested that you find your niche, which seems hard to do when you blog so randomly, but it did get me to thinking that perhaps I could slightly change my posting style to make the randomness less random.  I started to pay attention to other bloggers who seem to pack a lot of everything into one post and how they did it. I don't want to copy their style, but I'm going to start intentionally altering mine. Slightly.  Unfortunately most of the bloggers who blog in that style also lead off with a terrific photo, and my photos are a lot more snapshot and a lot less pretty, but I'm going to give it a shot.

The second post I read about blog identity was from my very good friend Trish. Yesterday she wrote a post about her blogger identity, and moving away from book blogging and into being "Just a Blogger." (It will seem to you that I am posting because she did, but really, I was thinking about it prior to reading her post!) I've never been a strict book blogger. I did used to post a lot more about what I read, and I still imagine that one day I'll do it again, but I've never been a hardcore book reviewer. I've always talked about more personal stuff, so I don't think that most of my readers will be surprised when I say that I'll continue to post about anything.   What I have always done though, is try to confine each post to ONE topic. If I'm talking about a book that's all the post is about. If it's about camping, it's about camping. Etc. I always thought that this was a way to make it easier for those of you not interested in reading about camping to just skip that post.  Then you didn't miss anything else I might say that might interest you.  The problem with this model is that you end up with a big handful of topics that you don't have quite enough to post about. Posts get skimpy because you (I) think that a little more research or thought needs to go into those posts, and who has time for that? Then the posts aren't written and you end up with a blog that gets a Random Friday post every week and that's about it.

So what does all this mean for my blog, specifically? Probably not a lot on your end. On my end, I'm hoping to write slightly broader posts. For example, instead of just "reviewing" the last book I read, I might want to talk a bit about it, and a bit about how it relates to me, or to how I associate it with where I was when I read it, or something. I want to do more of the "what we're loving now" type posts.   I'd like to put a little more thought into each post. Expect that posts might ramble more (hey! like this one!)   I'll probably change my Friday posting. I love the  "this moment" posts on Soule Mama, so maybe I will do those. I love my weekly post on what I'm reading though, so I will continue that. I'd like to expand it a bit, actually, and so will likely move it to another regular day. I'll still talk too much about my kids and I'll still continue to spam you with sewing and shop items.  I'd like to take suggestions from you on what you'd like to see. On what you hate to see. On how many pictures of the Princess is too many pictures of the Princess.

And it's completely possible that I won't change at all, because y'all, change is hard.

Nine Years

Nine years ago today I moved to South Dakota.

Scooter girl

Yeah, that's how I feel about it too. Happy and a bit surprised to find myself standing here. I still think of myself as being from Alabama, but after nine years maybe I should start saying I'm from South Dakota. Hands down, best decision I ever made.

RF: Walking!

  • Is it just me or are Fridays coming faster lately?
  • Guess who learned to walk this week?
  • We're headed back to Rapid City tonight for a big birthday party tomorrow. (Not my kids, a friend.) Mike is not going. I'm jealous of his entire night of uninterrupted sleep in a quiet apartment.
  • But I will get to have Starbucks while we're there, yes!
  • I made a dress for the birthday girl.Pillow case dress for a friend
  • Our school system is taking pictures on registration day (next week) instead of during the school year. I haven't ever heard of another school doing that.
  • I need to figure out how to download audio books and podcasts to my phone. I'd prefer they were free. Any suggestions?
  • Formatting is all off on this post, sorry.
Books I Read:
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth. Still enjoying it, but Mike stole it so I've mostly been reading other things.
  • Love Is the Higher Lawby David Levithan. Finished this one. It was good, but despite the topic (9/11) I wasn't as emotionally invested in it as the author would have expected.   There isn't really a plot at all, it's about processing the event and I suspect native New Yorkers would feel it more.
  • Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 11) by Charlaine Harris. Just started this one last night. Wish I had it on audio for the car ride.

    The 21 Day Challenge

    21 Day Challenge

One of the biggest challenges to staying at home is to not look like a total schlump (yes, I made that up.) It would be so easy to just wear yoga pants every day and not to care, and frankly, if we still lived in the old house I probably would. In fact, I'd be in my pajamas when Mike got home from work. But now that my job is staying home, I find that I am rebelling against the stereotype of a stay-at-home-mom who wears sweats and her husband's old shirts*. In June a friend and I made a pact to not wear pants (only skirts and the occasional pair of capris) for the entire month and crazily enough it's now August and you'll find me in a skirt almost every day. Granted, a lot of them are super casual and worn with a (non-printed) t-shirt. So when Kayla over at Freckles in April posted her 21 Day Challenge I decided to join in.

Here's how it works (description taken from the intro post):
For 21 days I will post a daily outfit prompt. Each Saturday I'll post the list of prompts for the week so you have some time to prepare, then the day before I'll put up a more detailed post with inspiration pictures.

Then, get dressed, take a picture and upload it to the 21 Day Challenge Flickr group* and/or blog about it and submit your link here on my blog. Cell phone pictures in bathroom mirrors are perfectly acceptable here (but if you want to go all out and take pictures in natural light and cool locations I will applaud you wildly).

I think I can do that. I just need to find a mirror that doesn't require that I stand on the toilet or edge of the bathtub...

(And did I mention there are prizes?)

*If you know me in person you know that this is SO not me. I Do. Not. Wear. sweats. You will never find me at the Walmarts in sweatpants and an old T-shirt. But I still don't want to be all sloppy and look like I don't care.
