Snow day, take three.

This is my front porch. Once again, we are in the middle of a blizzard and daycare and work are closed. After a weekend of solo parenting, this isn't the relaxing vacation you would imagine. In the last 11 days I have spent of 7 of them alone with the boys. (By that, I mean days that would normally either be daycare days or that both of us would be home. Not as in alone 24 of the 24 hours.) I really think that Stay-At-Home-Moms are either crazy or just operate under a different mindset. (Edited to add: I admire SAHMs very much, but I know that I could never do it!) I love my children very much, but I am not used to spending this much time with them, let alone this much time indoors.

I am ready for Spring.

  1. I think SAHM's can do it because they have nothing to compare it to. To them it's just a normal day. I could never be a SAHM. I would go stir crazy. I'm just not that patient.

What I'd like to know is how do snow days work? Are they just "free" days that you never have to make up? Or do you have to claim administative leave? If your kids were school age, would they have to make up the missed days of school on the back end? I always wondered about that.

  2. Well, as a SAHM, I certainly have something to compare it to - life before children. But, yes, I indeed am a bit crazy. You just do what you have to do and get through the day and look forward to the weekend (just like when working). I only have one child, which I'm sure is far easier in terms of workload, but also maybe a bit more stir-crazy inducing. I go out about three times/day with the stroller or carrier for walks, rain or shine, hot or cold!

  3. Being the old grandma that I am (even tho not yet 50) I so miss those stay at home days. And would give almost ANYTHING to have them back.
I was also a pre-school teacher and an elementary school librarian, so we'd probably do "projects" all day on snow days.

I know you meant that you admire stay at home moms...
we admire you too, because we are in awe, that you can be so organized.

Hopefully you'll get spring now! snow is pretty, but you've had enough?

  5. STORY OF MY LIFE! We've had snow all weekend. I certainly have something to compare my life too. Life before kids and a wonderful job before. To me, being a SAHM is not a normal day. I know what I'm missing out on (that's why I blog and twitter!). It's hard!! But I wouldn't trade it for anything. I just couldn't leave my boys. This is my job right now and I have plenty of time after their grown to go back to work. I'm with you on the snow going away. So sick of it.

  6. A couple of blizzard days are fun, but then it becomes cabin fever for almost anyone. :) Especially anyone with children!

  7. I'm with Natasha. It's difficult at times being a SAHM, but I've got plenty of time when they're older to go back to work and do other things. This time with them now is mine and I wouldn't give it up. I can understand how it's not for everyone though.

That is a lot of snow.
