To my children, one

Dear children-

I know that there are many parents who manage to write a love letter to you every month from your birth. I haven't been one of those, but I'd really like to be. The problem, is that there are now three of you, and I think I'd be writing letters once a week to do a monthly letter for each of you. Since your baby sister was born on the last day of the month, I've decided to write one letter each month to all three of you.  I'm really proud of the way you all get along and the way you boys have fallen in love with your sister (who still needs a blog name.) We've had our moments this month, there's definitely been some challenges, but every evening each of you is thrilled to see baby sister waiting in the car. I can't wait to see her smiling and laughing at the two of you.

Speaking of baby sister,  this last weeks you've started to smile in response to me. I wish I could say you're a quiet, predictable baby who sleeps all night, but that would be wishful thinking. Instead you are opinionated, loud, and impatient.  You still eat every 3.5 hours or so, but I can usually count on one longish nap in the morning. You have a couple cranky spells a day, of a couple hours each, where all you can do is snooze 10 minutes then cry for a few, snooze, cry, repeat. It's very frustrating for your parents, especially when the only thing that calms you is walking with you, and even MORE especially when it happens from 1 to 3 am!

Buggy boy, you've accepted your sister much more easily than your brother accepted you! We have to constantly guard against you squishing her with your enthusiasm, but I would never say you were intentionally hurtful towards her. You want to hug her all. the. time. You talk all the time and keep up with your brother in imagination and conversation. You know your Star Wars characters every bit as well as Sesame Street. You never hesitate to climb a slide or jump off something tall and you don't give a hoot what we tell you. In fact, we've discovered that once you've decided to do something there is no stopping you with bribes or threats or reason. You are determined to always have your way. You are 2 years 5 months old and the "terrible twos" could be named after you.  Despite this, you are a lot of fun to be around, your energy is insane and you keep us on our toes. Last night we discovered that you'll dance along with anyone dancing on tv- including the cast of Glee.

My Pirate, you're 5 years 5 months now. This was a big summer for you- you left the only daycare you can remember, you got a new sister, you started kindergarten. There are still more changes in store for you and I only hope you take them as well as you've handled the rest of the summer. You are a terrific big brother- most of the time.  Now that you spend more time with kids your own age you expect your brother to play by 5 year old rules, which doesn't happen. This  occasionally sends you into a fury of yelling and stomping, but we're working on that. This has also been a month of more rules and more expectations, many of which are hard for you to handle. I really think this is our fault more than yours, it's a lot to take in a short time. You're so happy and sweet and are free with your affection to all four of us, including your sister from day one. You love school and many nights come home to practice writing words and "reading" to your brother. You were so ready for what school is doing for you and I couldn't enjoy watching you enjoy school more.

There are days that are overwhelming with life with three kids. There are plenty of times that your dad and I lose our patience and our temper but we're learning just like you all are. We're so excited to see the direction that our family and our life has taken this month, and I can't wait til the end of next month to see what new things I'll have to record then. You kids are my heart and I hope to be a better parent to you every day than the day before.

Love,
Mommy

The Search by Nora Roberts

The SearchHey! Another Nora Roberts book! I wasn't in the market for another one right now, but when you request books from the library and 43 people have them on hold, you read them when you get them!

So, Nora Roberts' The Search. This one is a stand alone, not a series, and a little more serious than the Bride Quartet. This one has a mystery in it along with the romance, so might appeal to a wider range of readers. Fiona Bristow has moved to a small island off the coast of Washington to escape her past as the only survivor of a serial killer, now behind bars. Simon Doyle is a wood artist, who has moved to the island for some peace. His mother has gifted him with a puppy and Fiona happens to be a super star dog trainer. Simon goes to Fiona for help with Jaws, just as a copycat murderer emerges and Fiona is threatened again.

First, the good- the romance is really strong. The dialogue between them is excellent and the process isn't instant, but is also not torture for the reader. They don't have any stupid fights to prolong the process and it feels very natural. Both Fiona and Simon are enjoyable, but not perfect. By far my favorite part is the dog training parts, which is amazing because I'm not that much of a dog person. I know I've heard it before, but living with a toddler is an awful lot like living with a puppy. I've found myself remembering Fiona's training tips all week and applying them to my two year old! Not surprisingly, they seem to work with him as well.

The not so great- the suspense parts. They weren't actually bad, but they were very similar to her In Death books, written as J.D. Robb. For a large part of the book we know exactly who the bad guy is, as it's told from his point of view. This is old hat to In Death readers. It concludes nicely, and there aren't any big flaws to it, it just wasn't as exciting as it could have been without that background.

Despite this, I seem to be a huge fan of Roberts lately, and she's firmly on my auto-read list at this point.

Random Friday, all baby, all the time!

It seems like all I post about lately is the baby, when I post at all. Sorry about that, but don't expect much more for a while.  I do have one more book to review, but it's another Nora Roberts so a lot of you won't be interested. I'm starting Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson once I get a little cleaning done.

I've been on Twitter a lot more lately, trying to get into the rhythm of it. Feel free to follow me @lharsma.

I did a tiny bit of sewing this week. It feels good to get back into it, but it seems like just as I get set up to sew little miss wakes up and needs me.

I agreed to let The Pirate have a sleepover tonight. If you never hear from me again, this is why.

I'll try to be more interesting next week. Sorry about that!

I was gonna post today but...

I had plans to post something awesome today (no, don't know what, but something) but I am too tired to think straight. Miss Girl was crabby all evening yesterday, finally went to sleep about 10:45. Then she got up at 12:37, 2:30, 3:30, 4:40 and stayed up til 5:30. Of course she is sleeping NOW. I think I will join her!

Random Friday, at home

Is it bad that the episode of What Not to Wear with Blossom on it made me realize I need a hair cut?

Has anyone ever sold books on www.cash4books.net? Worth my time?

Baby girl has a lump on her head from birth (see above picture). It will go away in a couple months, no worries. The other day I ran into the grocery store with her and someone, a stranger!,  said, "What is WRONG with her head??" Are people just that stupid? What is WRONG with YOU?? Now I feel bad for my lumpy baby.

Speaking of lumpy, I am nursing the baby exclusively right now. We were out over the weekend and I was nursing her. I realized that I'm more embarrassed for someone to see my lumpy, stretch marked belly than a flash of boob.  I wonder what that says about me?

Yesterday the Pirate wore his t-ball shirt to school. It's a thin white t-shirt with a small pink stain on the front. It is too big for him.  At his daycare (before school) they fed him spaghetti for lunch, which he got all over himself.  It was BAD. The first thing he says to me when I pick him up? " guess what mom? Today was picture day!" Shouldn't they warn us of these things??

Recent Reads: A Felon and two romances

So I've read a few books lately that I haven't talked about, and I'm starting to forget what I think about them.  I've decided to just lump them all together into one post, even though I don't like to not give every book it's own review. I'm pretty sure if I don't get something posted I won't post at all!

Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's PrisonOrange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman is yet another memoir style book where the author spends a certain amount of time doing something unusual. In this case, the author is in prison for a decades old crime related to drugs.  She chooses to turn her experience into a book about prison life, which is good for her, and is somewhat interesting for the reader. She manages to keep it from being all about gossip and it's not overly condescending towards her fellow inmates who are all less educated than Kerman and from a lower economic background. She talks about how different prisons are completely different in terms of how they treat prisoners and what things are available at different places, for example, at one prison they did not even have underwear for her.  It's a quick and easy book to read, but I found Kerman to be annoying and to maintain the attitude that she was somehow better than everyone else, that she didn't belong there. (Despite never denying her guilt.) I picked this one up based on a review at Tina Says...

What Happens in LondonWhat Happens in London by Julie London. If you recall, I just read Ten Things I Love About You (review here) and enjoyed it, but thought that I should have read this one first. So I read it, and LOVED it. This has a nice slow falling in love, with no big drama at all in the first 9/10ths of the book.  Just as I was thinking that this was a perfect romance- all about the couple, no silly outside plot to distract, etc, outside plot happened. There wasn't much hint that it would end the way it did, so I was taken by surprise, but I still ended up loving the book. Harry is just about perfect in a refreshing way and it perfectly sets up for Seb's story in Ten Things.

Shut Up and Kiss MeShut Up and Kiss Me by Christie Craig made my TBR list due to this review at The Good, The Bad and the Unread.  I started it right before I had the baby, and then this was the book I had with me when she was readmitted to the hospital. I spent much of that day with only what I had with me in my purse and was able to finish this one up. The lure of humor is what made me pick it up, but in practice I found the elements that were supposed to be funny to be too slapstick for me. Fortunately, these things were usually things that happened to characters other than the hero and heroine. I did enjoy the interactions between Shala and Sky, but didn't really buy the romance between them- it happened way too fast and I found the "soul mate" aspect a little too woowoo.  So, good story, and great for an afternoon sitting around the hospital, but not one that makes me want to read another by this author.

Her birth story

I know that not everyone is interested in birth stories, but I wanted to get it written down before I forgot the details. Baby girl is now 9 days old (!!) and we're finally settling in to a bit of a routine. Her bilirubin levels had gone back up to a 20 and she was admitted to the hospital overnight last Friday. We spent 24 hours there and then got to bring her home again. On Tuesday she had her last heel stick and is now home for good.

Here's the story of her birth, sorry for the formatting.

My water broke at work just before 2pm on Tuesday, August 31st. I had just been home for lunch with no signs that I should expect to have a baby that day. I had my first contraction a few
minutes after 2 and texted my back up friend to come get me at 2:09. I called Mike, who was about 45 minutes away from town. I told work I was leaving and pretty much left immediately. Brianna picked
me up at work, and I got to the hospital at 2:50. By the time we got there I was contracting pretty hard, but still maybe 3 minutes apart. Got checked in and back to the room, skipping
labor triage.  Immediately got changed and into bed, the nurse checked me and I was already at a 7. She said I wasn't going to have time to get an epidural and that I
shouldn't freak out but that things were likely to get really hectic
around there. Contractions got closer and closer together, with very little rest in between. Just minutes
later I was at a 9. She said I could have an iv drug if I wanted it
and I did, but in the end it didn't matter.

My dr got there about 3:30 and I was already wanting to push. Brianna
called Mike at 3:36 to ask where he was- in the parking lot! She told him
to hurry. (I have very little memory of any of this part. Brianna was a total rock star answering my phone and returning texts and all that.) He ran in after pushing started. I really freaked out a bit,
thought I wouldn't be able to do it, and instead of finding some kind
of wild strength like you read about just felt crazy and wild. In the
end it was maybe 10 minutes of pushing (uh, I think?), but I didn't find that "place" of calm and strength and all that, it just hurt like hell. She was born at 3:47, less than an hour after getting to the hospital and no more than two hours after it all started. Mike made it in the room by 6 minutes. It was crazy.

The Pirate's labor was about 12 hours long, induced after my water broke but contractions didn't happen.
The Bug's labor was about 5.5 hours long, following the same pattern as the Girl's- water broke, immediate contractions- but not quite so fast and hard, and I got to have an epidural.
Baby Girl- 2 hours start to finish, no epidural, fairly pointless iv drug (made me briefly loopy, but did not give any pain relief.)
If I needed another reason not to have a fourth child, it would be because I don't want to have a baby in the car! I'm really glad that I wasn't any farther from the hospital and that someone was able to take me in right away. I'd never have been able to drive myself and if I'd waited for Mike I'd never have made it in time.

Anyone else have experience with a super fast birth?  While I expected it to be quick, I really never considered the lack of drugs. I know that some people choose to go drug free, but that is so not for me, at least not on purpose!

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, briefly

The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More FunThe Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin is one of those books that fit the category I like (stunt memoir) but that I never get around to reading when I check it out of the library. I'd had this one home twice before I saw this review by raych at books i done read, in which she gave it TEN caterpillars and then I had to go back and get it at third time.

That insanely long title pretty much sums up the premise of the book. Rubin decides to spend a year trying to be happier, kinda on the basis of fake it til you make it. It's not that she's sad or depressed, but that one day she realizes that she's kinda going through to motions waiting for "real" life to start.  At this point in her introduction I felt like I was going to love this book. I am increasingly aware of the fact that I am waiting for something elusive to happen before ... well, I don't know. It's just a vague feeling that I'm waiting on real life to start. I just had my third child. What else can I be waiting on?  Anyway, the introduction hit all the right notes and I thought I was really going to connect with the author. And I did, for a while. Maybe 2/3rds of the way through I started to get bored. It was like she was losing steam and repeating herself, a lot. I went ahead and finished and I wouldn't say that I disliked the book at all, but it didn't pan out to be all that I had hoped.
